Miller improves in Moto3 warm-up

Australian Jack Miller is poised to resume his fight for the Moto3 world championship after a strong showing in his final practice session.

In windy conditions on Phillip Island, Miller was second only to his championship rival Alex Marquez in Sunday’s morning warm-up.

Miller’s time of 1:36.412 was his quickest lap around the coastal circuit all weekend, though not quick enough to beat Marquez with 1:36.289.

Miller will start from the third row of the grid in eighth position after a difficult qualifying session yesterday.

The Townsville rider was unable to find space on the track for a clear run needed to chart a fast time.

His best effort came late in qualifying but placed him well behind pole-sitter Marquez, who sits 25 points above Miller in the Moto3 standings with just three races remaining.

Remy Gardner, son of motorcycling world champion Wayne Gardner, has continued to step up with each session across the weekend.

His warm up speed placed him 20th although the talented rider will start in 24th on the grid.

A strong showing in Sunday’s race would put the 16-year-old in a good position to pick up a permanent Moto3 berth in the future.

The field has been reduced to 33 riders after scans on Brazilian rider Eric Granado showed dorsal spinal fractures from a heavy crash in qualifying.

Fellow wildcard rider Olly Simpson will start second last on the grid.

The Moto3 race begins at 1pm AEST, with the MotoGP due to start three hours later.
