Lowndes prepares for V8 history

Craig Lowndes returns to Symmons Plains Raceway on Sunday the brink of V8 Supercars history.

If the Red Bull Racing driver can repeat his success from Saturday, he’ll be the first to reach 100 race victories.

With plenty of Kiwis in the field, a century of race wins to Lowndes on the day of the cricket World Cup final would be apt.

But the man himself is playing down what it would mean to accomplish the feat.

“It’s just a number,” Lowndes said.

“It’s a number that racks up behind the scenes and I’m just thankful I’ve been around long enough to try and get to it.

“I’d love to get to 100, but that’s not my focus for tomorrow.

“My focus will be to drive fast.”

Holden Racing Team’s series leader James Courtney, who shared the podium with Lowndes during both Saturday races, said it would be a huge achievement.

“It just shows what a good career he’s had .. he’s really an icon of our sport, I can remember karting and watching him,” he said.

“I’d be singing it if it was me.”

The potential for the huge milestone is a shock.

On Saturday, Lowndes won as many races as he did in the 12 months prior.

They were 60km sprints and as he chases a slice of history on Sunday, the game at the rural Tasmanian circuit.

“Tomorrow is 84 laps, 200km, its a long way around here and strategy is going to play a huge part,” Lowndes said.

“If you haven’t got the car speed you need strategy and hopefully both our cars will have both.”

Courtney’s teammate Garth Tander, who finished fourth in Saturday’s second race, said HRT was making some progress to chase down the Red Bulls.

“They were light years in front of everyone last year,” he said.

“We can see them now, so that’s a start.
