Gardner impresses on Phillip Island

Remy Gardner has continued to impress on his Australian Grand Prix debut.

The 16-year-old son of Australian world champion Wayne Gardner slashed his best Friday practice time as he looks to convert his wildcard Moto3 ride into a regular team position.

Gardner’s 1:37.641 on Saturday was competitive on a very fast practice session, placing the teenager 21st.

Efren Vazquez was quickest with a 1:36.377 lap, faster than the Moto3 lap record around the Phillip Island circuit.

The two chief title rivals, Spaniard Alex Marquez and Australian Jack Miller, were amongst 16 riders within a second of Vazquez’s sharp time.

Marquez slotted in fourth, while Miller was one of few riders not to improve his Friday time, finishing 12th with a 1:37.050 best lap.

The 19-year-old Queenslander topped the timing charts during Friday’s afternoon practice.

The practice sessions are generally used by teams to adjust set-up and try out configurations on the bike ahead of qualifying and the race.

Olly Simpson, who has joined Gardner as an Australian wildcard, also improved his best Friday time to sit 32nd with 1:38.794.

Qualifying for the Moto3 race begins at 1:35pm.
