Ford future in V8s to be known end of 2014

Ford will wait until the end of the season before announcing whether they’ll continue their involvement in V8 Supercars.

Reports emerged on Friday that the Blue Oval was planning to exit the sport after its sponsorship of Ford Performance Racing expired in December 2014.

FPR have confirmed they will race the last Falcon, the FG X, next year, alongside the to-be-formed Dick Johnson Racing and Team Penske outfit.

Ford Australia president Bob Graziano, in Bathurst for Sunday’s 1000km race, wouldn’t comment on speculation about the manufacturer’s future in V8s but said negotiations with FPR are ongoing.

“We are working with the teams now and any announcements we have will be after the season is over and that hasn’t changed,” Graziano told v8supercars.com.au.

“I am here to support the team and see Frosty (FPR driver Mark Winterbottom) take it back to back.

“We are here talking about the new XR8 and the teams have talked about homologating the 2015 Falcon. And that’s the story.

“It’s a great sport and I love the fans that we have got and the teams we have got. But right now we are focused on 2014 and Bathurst.”

Ford announced last year it was going to stop manufacturing cars in Australia from 2016, sounding the death knell for the locally-produced Falcon.

V8 Supercars are set to be considering allowing engine types other than V8s in the category from as early as 2016.
