Red Bull Racing driver Craig Lowndes has sensationally crashed out of race one of the Townsville V8 Supercars meet, ending a long-running finishing streak.
After being turned around on lap one, Lowndes pitted and spent a lengthy spell in the garage.
He re-entered the race 10 laps behind the field but determined to finish to score crucial championship points.
Unfortunately for the former champion, his steering failed on lap 12, missing a turn and ending up in a tyre bank.
Lowndes was unhurt in the crash but loses his incredible streak of avoiding DNF results – which will rest at 81 races.
His team will now attempt to fix the 888 car ahead of race two, which begins at 4:50pm.
