Australians tumble in AusGP practice

Local riders are tumbling across all three divisions during practice for the Australian Grand Prix.

MotoGP rider Broc Parkes came off later during his practice, while Anthony West high-sided in his Moto2 session after wildcard Olly Simpson crashed in his debut Moto3 ride.

All three riders are understood to have avoided serious injury, able to walk away from their crashes.

Both West and Parkes showed a limp in the aftermath of their incidents, with West able to jump back on his bike to complete his session after a nasty-looking highside.

Parkes’ fall came late during his practice, failing to negotiate turn one.

South Australian Simpson’s crash at Lukey Heights began the tough morning for local hopes.

The 16-year-old was unable to complete his session but was unruffled by his fall and is keen to resume his debut grand prix ride.

The Moto2 practice session was particularly troublesome, with several riders taking trips to the gravel traps.

Finnish rider Mika Kallio walked away from a particularly spectacular crash with the tyre wall, somersaulting onto his feet.

The crashes came despite postcard-perfect conditions on Phillip Island, with even the notorious local winds largely at bay.

Friday’s first MotoGP practice session ahead of Sunday’s Australian grand prix produced a surprise result, with Aleix Esparago leading all-comers with a 1:29.749 lap.

Jorge Lorenzo was second with 1:29.909, while 2014 championship winner Marc Marquez was fifth with 1:30.079.

Australia’s sole MotoGP rider Parkes finished 22nd of 23 with a 1:32.692 fastest lap.

During Moto2 practice, Esteve Rabat was fastest with 1:33.417.

West moved steadily up the Moto2 timesheets to place 22nd of 35 with a 1:34.818.

Practice continues in the afternoon.
