News:

Two wet track wins have earned Foreign Prince a tilt at a rich winter race with trainer David Payne eyeing the $160,000 Grafton Cup.

Foreign Prince’s win in Saturday’s Kensei Handicap at Rosehill, his first at 2000 metres, has his trainer confident he can deserves a chance at the 2350m of the Listed Grafton Cup on July 15.

“He is a horse that had a few problems early on but he loves winter racing and the cut out of the ground,” Payne said.

“Now that he is in form we have to have a go at a race like that. He deserves it.”

Foreign Prince is a half brother to Julinsky Prince, a dual Group One winner in New Zealand this season.

Although 10 of Julinsky Prince’s 11 wins have been over 1600m, Payne believes his younger sibling can handle the step up in distance.

“As long as he is ridden to relax I think we can give him a go at a longer race,” Payne said.

A natural leader, Foreign Prince was allowed to relax in Saturday’s race with apprentice Deanne Panya applying the pressure midway through.

Panya stuck to the rail and Foreign Prince asserted his authority to beat Sebrina by three lengths.

Five of Foreign Prince’s wins have been on soft or heavy tracks.
