News:

An efficiency drive has led to an initiative to base Racing Victoria stewards and vets at the Cranbourne racetrack.

A team of six stewards and vets will move into offices at the course with the task of overseeing the large horse population in work at Cranbourne and officiating at venues in the east of Victoria.

RV’s chief steward Terry Bailey says the plan will save the organisation thousands of dollars every year, money that could be used in other areas of the integrity department.

“Many years ago a decision was made that all these things had to be run out of Melbourne but that’s just not financially viable these days,” Bailey said.

“Financially, we are better served to have a presence where the (horse) population is.”

Bailey said the permanent stewards’ presence at Cranbourne would enable more out of competition drug testing in the area but the team would also be able to provide a better service to assist licence holders.

“Presence is a very big thing that probably gets overlooked these days, not only in racing but in all areas,” he said.

“The door will be open for trainers, jockey and stablehands that need guidance, the stewards will be there for them.”

Bailey said RV is in the process of setting up an office at Bendigo to serve as a permanent base for steward Peter Ryan.

The chief steward said the RV integrity department would look at other regional areas in which to place stewards.
