Waller pleased with 2014 Melbourne, Caulfield Cup rehandicaps

Weight penalties for Junoob and Who Shot Thebarman have increased trainer Chris Waller’s Caulfield Cup contenders to a possible four runners.

Junoob, winner of the Group One Metropolitan at Randwick on Saturday, and Who Shot Thebarman who took out the Bart Cummings at Flemington on the same day, have both received an extra 1.5kg for those victories.

The penalty takes Auckland Cup winner Who Shot Thebarman to 53kg for the Caulfield Cup while Junoob goes up to 53.5kg.

Who Shot Thebarman also received an extra .5kg in the Melbourne Cup to take him to 55kg while Junoob goes up to 55.5kg.

Waller is also planning to run Hawkspur and Moriarty in the Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 18.

“We could possibly have four runners in the Caulfield Cup,” Waller said.

“I’m grateful for the re-handicaps.

“I’m still a novice at the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

“It’s got to be a privilege to have a starter in the Caulfield Cup and we don’t want to waste the opportunities so if they all get in they will run.”

Epsom Handicap winner He’s Your Man also received an extra 1.5kg for his Group One win but Waller said he was more likely to stick to shorter distances this time around.

“He won two races over 2400 metres in France but are those wins good enough to win a Caulfield Cup? I doubt it,” he said.

Who Shot Thebarman is the most favoured of the Waller horses for the Melbourne Cup on the third line of TAB’s betting at $15. He is a $13 chance in the Caulfield Cup with both markets headed by Saturday’s Turnbull Stakes winner Lucia Valentina.

“Who Shot Thebarman is a Group One winner in New Zealand over the Melbourne Cup distance of 3200 metres and a Group Two winner over 2400,” Waller said.

“He is a genuine stayer.”
