Waller adds overseas flavour to Randwick

Renowned for his strike rate with overseas horses, Chris Waller has turned his hand to importing big-race jockeys.

Waller called on Hong Kong-based Zac Purton to steer Sacred Falls to his second successive Doncaster Mile triumph in the autumn and the premier rider again got the job done on the same horse in last month’s George Main Stakes.

This weekend Waller has snapped up former Singapore champion Joao Moreira to partner He’s Your Man in Saturday’s Group One Epsom Handicap at Randwick.

“It’s often a trap bringing a jockey to Sydney but he’s been here a few times now which I give a lot of relevance to,” Waller said of Moreira.

“Through having that experience of riding in Sydney before I think he’s the right man for the job and he can ride at a light weight.”

Waller is also convinced He’s Your Man has the profile to be the right horse – provided he can reproduce his brilliance over a shorter journey.

The six-year-old has raced over 1800m and 2000m at his past two runs and his ability to adapt to a distance drop is Waller’s only query.

“He’s the right horse, we’ve just got to hope he can sprint over the mile,” Waller said.

“He has won a couple of times over 2400 metres in France and they’ve got a great knack of finding a horse’s distances pretty early in their career and they seldom get it wrong.

“For my sake, I hope they’ve got it wrong and he’s not a 2400-metre horse.”

Moreira has five Randwick rides for Waller.

He links with Our Voodoo Prince for the premier trainer in the Group One Metropolitan along with stablemate Austrian in the Breeders’ Plate, Brazen Beau in the Roman Consul Stakes and Vilanova in the Craven Plate.
