A capacity field of sixteen will take part in the second of three Group 1 races scheduled for Rosehill this Saturday, the Vinery Stud Stakes. Punters have got it right more often than not in recent years when it comes to this race with three of the past four winners, Faint Perfume, Mosheen and Norzita, all starting favourites. This year it is 4/1 with a further eight runners quoted at $15.00 or under. Leading the way, only just, is Solicit at $4.80 in advance of Zanbagh ($5.50), the ATC Oaks favourite who will start from the outside gate. New Zealand filly Rising Romance, who is coming of a second placing to Puccini in the NZ Derby, is also $5.50.

1. SOLICIT – C Schofield (7)
She returned from a most consistent spring campaign by winning the G3 Mitty’s Vanity (1400m) and G2 Kewney Stakes (1400m), both in convincing style. With those two runs under her belt it was no surprise to see her start odds-on in the Listed Alexandra Stakes (1600m) at her most recent start. She jumped well but surprisingly her jock on that occasion decided to opt for a sit behind the leader, rather than roll along in front as he had done so successfully previously. She was caught behind the leader when the pace went on and tightened in the run home looking for a gap on the fence, before finishing a disappointing fourth (2.3 lengths) to Marianne. No chances will be taken here, she’ll be up front and rolling and be right in the mix.

2. ZANBAGH – B Shinn (19)
Ran a head second in the VRC Oaks last year off a light preparation and each of her three runs back since that campaign, have suggested she’ll be a leading contender in the ATC version in a few week time. Was working home nicely when finishing fifth (1.6 lengths) behind Thump in the G2 Surround Stakes (1400m) before comfortably winning the G3 Keith Nolan (1600m) at Kembla Grange a fortnight ago. Stable is firing out the moment and although she’s drawn poorly, could not be dismissed on that fact only.

3. MARIANNE – C Williams (4)
She had to survive a protest, but the Mick Kent filly registered a thoroughly deserved victory in the Listed Alexandra Stakes (1600m) last start at Moonee Valley. She sat just worse than midfield in the run before making her move at the 600m and finishing well. That victory had followed four consecutive second placings, all at G2 and G3 level. She’ll get a good run from gate four and although unknown beyond a mile, will be sure to give a strong account of herself.

4. RISING ROMANCE – J McDonald (9)
One of two well credentialed New Zealand fillies that have made the trip across the Tasman. This filly by Ekraar finished second to Puccini in the New Zealand Derby (2400m) last start, five weeks ago, where she made up a lot of ground in the run home. Puccini started favourite in last week’s G1 Rosehill Guineas but a wet track and a slipped saddle meant we didn’t see the best of him. Her record is strong at home and includes a G2 win over Lucia Valentina on a slow track in the Royal Stakes (2000m). Trainer ran third in this race last year with another Ekraar filly, Habibi and has taken out a Metropolitan with Victory Smile so she has to be treated with the utmost respect.

5. MISS MOSSMAN – N Rawiller (3)
Trainer (John Sargent) and Jockey combined with Kirramosa to claim last year’s VRC Oaks last year and have another live chance at a G1 race with this Mossman filly. Three weeks ago, she claimed the G1 NZ Oaks (2400m) in emphatic style, defeating Miss Selby by 3 ½ lengths. That was only her third win from nineteen starts but stepping beyond a mile only recently, has seen her perform very well in Group races. Should be hitting the line hard.

6. SUAVITO – D Oliver (17)
Both runs back from her spring campaign have been first rate and the daughter of Thorn Park is a leading contender here, despite the poor barrier. She finished well first up to run third (1.1 lengths) behind Solicit in the G2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) before finishing hard to record a narrow loss to the in-form Marianne in the Listed Alexandra Stakes (1600m). Fired in protest that was dismissed by Stewards but with another stride and she wouldn’t have had to worry. Finished very well suggesting the 2000m third up is ideal.

7. DEFINE – C Newitt (10)
After failing in a BM 74 (1500m) as a 7/2 chance, the Chris Waller trained filly was given five weeks off before ambitiously returning in the G2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) a fortnight ago. Starting at 30/1, she belied her price after securing a lovely run throughout, by finishing a length second to the in-form Traitor. Fitter again and a repeat performance should see her in the mix but does jump to 2000m now and for the first time in her career.

8. ALL CERISE – G Schofield (2)
The daughter of Redoute’s Choice has really put it together this campaign, winning her first two races this time in, in impressive style before struggling under the 59kgs when second to Forever Loved. Her only run since has been a good effort in the G2 Phar Lap Stakes where she tagged Guelph in the run and chased her and the leaders valiantly in the run home, finishing fourth and only 1.6 lengths away. She’s getting better with every race this time in and has drawn well. Run might’ve just peaked a touch though late last start and the step up to 2000m, her first time beyond 1500m, is a concern.

9. INTERSPERSED – K McEvoy (8)
Promising filly by the hot sire of the moment Sebring (Criterion, See The Maid, Dissident etc) who made up a lot of ground from near last on the turn at her most recent start, the G3 Keith Nolan (1600m) at Kembla Grange. She did well to finish fourth behind Zanbagh, only 1 ¼ lengths away. That followed a strong head win in the Listed Canberra Guineas (1400m) where she accounted for Heading in very much the right direction and gave the impression last start that 2000m should pose no problems.

10. SENSIBILITY – B Avdulla (1)
More has been expected of this Redoute’s Choice filly in her two runs back from a spell than what she has produced. She has finished down the track behind Solicit in both the G3 Mitty’s Vanity (1400m) and G2 Kewney Stakes (1400m). Peters Moody’s Heads into this race not having raced now for four weeks and jumping from seven furlongs to 2000m. It would be a special performance from both horse and trainer if she could win of such a preparation.

11. ARTISTIC LASS – J Collett (12)
Continued her consistent run in Benchmark graded races last start, with a second to Shikra in a BM 70 (1800m) at a mid-week meeting at Kensington. That was her first run for over a month and she closed well from last on the turn, so expect her to be fitter and be suited by the 2000m. Worth noting too, that she also beat Pheidon home recently who went on to win the G2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at his next start. If you’re after a roughie, she’s not the worse of them.

12. FOREVER LOVED – D Browne (15)
The daughter of High Chaparral showed good fight when, two starts ago, she defied the challenge of All Cerise (good again since) in a BM 74 (1500m), winning by 1 ¾ lengths. She then contested the G3 Aspiration Quality (1600m) at her next and most recent start but found little when the pressure was applied this time and weakened in the run home to finish tenth (7.4 lengths) behind Diamond Drille. That was the second time she’s contested a Group race where she has been easily accounted for on both occasions.

13. LUCIA VALENTIA – J Bowman (11)
A former New Zealand galloper that has had two starts for her new trainer Kris Lees, since arriving in Australian at the start of the year. She ran a very encouraging third (1.3 lengths) in the Surround Stakes (1400m), followed by a twelfth of sixteen in the G1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) a fortnight ago. Got back in the Coolmore, a race dominated by the leader Steps In Time and was holding her ground late, finishing just over 4 lengths from the winner. Might be looking for longer now and did run second to Rising Romance in a G2 race over 2000m before coming across. Has to be rated a chance.

14. CASINO DANCER – C Reith (6)
The Casino Prince filly continues to run on her races, all in grades much easier than this one, with her most recent run being a tenth (2.6 lengths) behind Zanbagh in the G3 Keith Nolan a fortnight ago. She drew the inside gate last start which given the way she races, drops out and comes wide, didn’t suit and the 2000m should be to her liking but is still yet to prove herself in this class.

15. AMANPOUR – T Berry (5)
Registered her maiden win at Kensington three starts back, her seventh career start, by bowling along out in front in the 1800m Maiden and simply running her rivals off of their feet, wining by almost seven lengths. She did the same at her next start, this time at Canterbury in a BM 69 (1900m) winning by two. Her most recent start, the G3 Keith Nolan (1600m) saw her jump awkwardly and fall to the tail of the field and from there, she never figured. Will shoot to the front here from 5, run them along and give them something to chase but at this level, they should be able to reel her in.

16. ALL MY LOVING – S Clipperton (14)
Scored her maiden win two starts back, at her eighth start, for trainer Gary Portelli in a Kembla Grange Maiden (2000m) and backed that up with another win, same track and trip, in BM 65. The filly by Not A Single Doubt is coming into her own now that she’s up to the middle distances but aiming way too high here would think.

17. MISSVONN – G Boss (18) (1st EM)
She finished well behind her more fancied stable-mate Zanbagh in the G3 Keith Nolan Stakes, finishing fifth and only 1 ½ lengths form the winner. Comes from the right stable and only four starts in to her second preparation, would still be improving.

18. CUBAN STAR – (13) (2nd EM)
Teofilo filly that has won one of her five starts, a Nowra Class 1 (2215m) but who was well accounted for in a similar grade at Newcastle last start.

19. BLUE EYES – R McLeod (16) (3rd EM)
Full sister to stable-mate and Group 1 winner of the ATC Derby Ethiopia, should she get a run she’ll be lining up for only her fourth race start. Would prefer in something much easier at his stage.

RACE OVERVIEW
A very tricky race with a number of the leading contenders having drawn poorly here in Suavito and Zanbagh, add to the mix that a number are untested over the distance and it’s a tough race for punters to decipher. Jock took the wrong option on Solicit last start and he should’ve pushed forward. From gate seven, she’ll get the chance to take up the running and if the pace is too hot, the option to take a sit. Expect a sharp improvement. Beating her home last start was Suavito, who ran a cracking trial for this race, hitting the line hard second up over a mile. She has to go in despite the gate as does Zanbagh. She has above average ability and Shinn will no wait for things to happen in the race. He has the horse to make his own luck. The New Zealander Rising Romance has all the credentials whilst a former New Zealander, Lucia Valentina, will appreciate the step up to 2000m after a solid effort in the Coolmore.
