All Victorian Sprint Series Final Tips – 2014

Vain Queen looks set to increase her impeccable strike rate and register her first stakes win, when she lines up as the odds-on favourite in this weekend’s All Victorian Sprint Final at Flemington. The John Sadler trained mare, who has won six of her eight starts and her most recent – up the Flemington straight, by an impressive margin, opened up $1.70 for Saturday’s feature. Only the consistent Le Bonsir ($6.50) is the only other runner under double figure odds.

1. READY TO RIP – L Nolen (7) 60kgs

Scratched at the barrier for last week’s Sir John Monash Stakes, Peter Moody’s galloper returns to Flemington, where had his most recent start seven weeks ago. That effort resulted in a seventh (2.4 lengths) behind Lonhspresso where he settled back in the field from a wide gate. The freshen up should have served him well and he generally races well fresh and has a third (beaten less than a length) to Spirit Of Boom and Shamal Wind when resuming.

2. LE BONSIR – D Moor (5) 59kgs

A typically honest effort from this 6yo gelding last week when he finished second behind the impressive Lord Of The Sky in the G3 Sir John Monash Stakes. That run has seen him finish in the top of five of each of his six runs this year and with two placings from as many starts this track/trip, including a head second to Lonhspresso in the recent Listed Straight Six, he his sure to be in the mix again.

3. BROKEN – M Payne (1) 57.5kgs

Darren Weir’s gelding was in good form last spring, claiming G3 and Listed race and backing that up with solid performances in G2 events where she finishing on the heels on the place-getters. However the rising 8yo has struggled to capture that same form in three runs back from a spell, with his most recent outing seeing him run a plain ninth (9 lengths) behind Vain Queen at this track. Hard to see him figuring on current form.

4. PILLAR OF CREATION – D Lane (2) 57kgs

Continued his good form this preparation by scoring his second consecutive win in last week’s Open (1400m) race at Caulfield. The God’s Own 4yo settled midfield from a good draw and wore down the leaders to win by a long neck with First Course second. Drops back a furlong in the space of a week but never going better and sure to be strong late.

5. SHANGHAI WARRIOR – B Melham (3) 56.5kgs

Good to see this once promising 5yo returned from a long injury enforced spell of 15 months, with two solid efforts in the past month. He finished second (3.3 lengths) to The Thief first up over 1100m at Flemington and returned to the course and trip, to run third (6 ¼ lengths) to Vain Queen. Step up to 1200m a bonus but still has some improving to do to be winning here.

6. VAIN QUEEN – G Boss (8) 56.5kgs

The Artie Schiller 4yo mare could not have been more impressive in posting a comfortable 3 ¾ length win up the Flemington straight (1100m) at her most recent start a fortnight ago. She sat on the pace and extended in good fashion late to dominate her rivals who were headed by The Thief and another three lengths away, Shanghai Warrior.
The same performance sees her win.

7. NEAREST TO PIN – (10) 55kgs

He went within a whisker of making it two wins from his last three starts when nosed out three weeks ago by Pillar Of Creation at Moonee Valley (1200m). Adelaide Trainer Leon Macdonald has the speedy son of Golden Snake going well and he did finish 3.5 lengths from Richie’s Vibe in the Listed Mss Security Stakes this track/trip last pring. The draw is potentially an awkward one but has the speed to be in this for a long way.

8. KOE – D Dunn (6) 54kgs

Unbeaten in two starts at Flemington, both over 1400m and both twelve months ago when her form was much stronger than what it has been since she returned from spell earlier in the year. Each of her three runs have seen her well accounted for and she’ll tackle this first up off a ten week freshen up but likely to start a big price.

9. FELIDEA – (4) 54kgs

Stable-mate to Nearest To Pin, this 5yo stallion returned from a twenty-six week spell with a poor second to last (beaten 11.9 lengths) in a Open class race over 1100m here at Flemington. Despite some promising trials leading into that race, the son of Hold That Tiger never made an impression from the back of the field and hard to see him improving enough to figure here.

10. CORSICA LAD – C Newitt (9) 54kgs

The Shamardal 4yo only made his debut in May of this year but made the wait worthwhile for his connections, recording a 1.5 length win in a Wagga Maiden. He back that up with his only start since, with a strong 3.5 length win in a Swan Hill RST 64, carrying 59kgs. Jumps up significantly in grade here but could not have done anymore than he did last start and will still be improving.

RACE OVERVIEW

Vain Queen is clearly the one to beat here and although drawn a touch awkwardly in eight, had enough to spare over a similar field at her last start that she should be able to overcome that obstacle. Le Bonsir never runs a bad race and Nearest To Pin might add some value. He’s a speedy type with a good strike rate.
