Breeders’ Plate winner Law will have his first start for the Chris Waller stable on Saturday with his preparation geared towards the $1 million Golden Rose.
Zoustar gave the trainer his first win in the Group One race last season but Waller admitted he was still getting to know Law, previously with Gai Waterhouse.
Law has been entered for two races at Randwick with Waller favouring the Group Three San Domenico over another 1100m race on the program.
“We have given him three trials to try to teach him to settle,” Waller said.
“He came to us in great order but I wasn’t happy with his second trial when he over-raced badly.
“I really want to see him finishing off his races.
“We ask a lot of these horses. We want them to win as two-year-olds and then they have to come back at three and to reach a race like the Golden Rose they have to be able to finish off a strong 1400 metres.”
Law is from the first crop by 2009 Golden Rose winner Denman out of Lady Cat, a South American Group Three winner.
Lady Cat’s five career wins were from 1500 to 2200 metres while Denman won from 1100 to the 1400 metres of the Golden Rose.
There were nine entries taken on Monday for the San Domenico including Bugatty and Nostradamus from the Hawkes training team.
Nostradamus was a narrow winner over Golden Slipper placegetter Bring Me The Maid in a Hawkesbury barrier trial on Monday morning.
Waterhouse has nominated Hampton Court and Wandjina.
Waller has eight of 22 entries for the Spring Preview (1400m) with new acquisition Who Shot Thebarman the equal highest-rated on 103 with Honorius from the David Payne stable.
The winner of the Auckland Cup in March, Who Shot Thebarman is on a path towards the Melbourne Cup if he measures up.
