Young Victorian apprentice Ben Thompson can further endear himself to the Gary Colvin stable aboard Miss Bemuse at Albury on Tuesday.
Thompson, 17, is indentured to Mick Kent at Cranbourne but is scheduled to join Colvin’s Wagga stables on a three-month loan in the near future.
Thompson has already ridden a winner for Colvin, claiming a 2500m staying race aboard Court Up In Rio at his first ride for the stable.
“He’s only young and still learning but he’s got a bright future,” Colvin said.
“He conducts himself really well and is a credit to his family.
“It will be good to have him around.”
Miss Bemuse tackles the Crown Golden Ale Benchmark 70 Hcp over 1175m. Thompson’s three kilo claim will reduce the five-year-old mare’s weight to 57kg.
By American sire Librettist, Miss Bemuse is a highly-strung mare according to Colvin, and will carry a tongue tie for only the second time in her career.
She wore the new gear last start when 2-1/2 lengths fourth behind Spanish Shoes over 1200m at Canberra on September 12.
“After her run at Canterbury (August 20) she came back blowing after the race when there was no reason to because she is well and truly fit,” Colvin said.
“She’s been getting the tongue back a bit and I think she’s been holding her breath.
“She’s worked in the tongue tie and it’s been helping.”
Miss Bemuse has been in good form this campaign registering two wins and a third from her past five starts.

“It does look a nice race for her on Tuesday,” Colvin said. “Her work’s been good and I’m happy with her.
“She gets in pretty well after Ben’s claim and races well at Albury.”
