Trainers support Wyong Gold Cup 2014

Leading Sydney trainers Chris Waller, Joe Pride and Gai Waterhouse have thrown their support behind the Wyong Gold Cup with multiple entries in the provincial feature.

Both Waller and Waterhouse have four nominations for Friday’s Listed Cup (2100m) while Pride has two as does dual state trainer Mike Moroney.

“Brigantin, Multilateral and Secessio are my likely runners,” Waller said.

“Hoylonny is doubtful but we will just wait and see.”

Hoylonny failed on the heavy track in Saturday’s Premier’s Cup (1800m) at Rosehill won by the Waterhouse-trained Greatwood.

Waller will be after his fourth win in the race having taken it out with Hawk Island in 2010, The Verminator in 2011 and Wazn last year.

The Verminator went on to win the 2011 Group One Metropolitan (2400m).

Travolta from the Waterhouse stable and the Pride-trained Destiny’s Kiss head the ratings for the Wyong feature on 103, one point higher then Brigantin.

Waterhouse’s other nominations are Laidback Larry, Michelangelo and Grafton Cup winner Queenstown while Pride also has Canny Ballad in the mix.

John Sargent will make do with just one Cup runner, Queensland Cup winner Iggi Pop, and has ambitions for a stakes double with Neena Rock to make her Australian debut in the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m).

“Jim Byrne rode Iggi Pop to win the Queensland Cup and he will come down to Wyong to ride him again,” Sargent said.

“The plan is to run at Wyong and Newcastle leading up to the Metropolitan.

“Neena Rock is a Group Three winner in New Zealand but it’s important for her breeding future to get some Australian black type.

“She will stay in training this season with that view.

“James McDonald was pleased with her trial win and he rides her on Friday.”

Neena Rock is one of 29 nominations for the Mona Lisa (1350m).

Sargent has also entered Iggi Pop and Neena Rock for races at Randwick on Saturday as a contingency in case Wyong is wet.
