Tattersall’s Mile 2014 day: Heathcote admits title almost out of reach

Robert Heathcote is not losing any sleep about the impending handover of his Brisbane trainers’ title to Tony Gollan.

In fact he hopes to catch up on some lost time over the next few weeks on a rare holiday in Vietnam.

The winner of the past five Brisbane titles, Heathcote is 6-1/2 wins behind Tony Gollan and half a win ahead of Matt Dunn going into Saturday’s Tattersall’s Mile meeting at Doomben with six racing days left this season.

“I don’t think I can catch Tony,” Heathcote said.

“I was surprised I won the premiership last year. But we have had a great season all the same and I’m going away for three weeks to Vietnam.

“I haven’t had a holiday for two years. Getting up at 3am and working 24/7 wears you down.

“You don’t realise it at the time. You just keep going, but it’s not a normal lifestyle.

“Tony has had a great season and so has Matt. They are young guys, keen and enthusiastic. It’s good for racing.”

Heathcote has seven runners heading to Doomben including Veewap and Bewhatyouwannabe in the feature race.

“Realistically the market reflects their chances but Veewap is rising nine and having a resurgence in life,” Heathcote said.

“Bewhatyouwannabe is going up in grade but is promising.

“However if Kingdoms produces a repeat of what he did last time then nothing else is going to beat him.”

Formerly prepared in Sydney by John O’Shea, Kingdoms produced a brilliant finish to win the Listed Centenary Mile on June 21 for new trainer Brian Smith.

Kingdoms was the TAB’s $2.40 favourite on Friday with Veewap and Bewhatyouwannabe at $26 and $15 respectively.

Heathcote will come back for the new season with a team reduced in numbers by necessity.

“They are going to close Eagle Farm while they do the renovations so we have to go across to Doomben which has only one sand track,” he said.

“There will be 550 horses working there. I have cut back from 70 to 40. It’s short-term pain for long-term gain.”
