News:

The Boxing Day meeting at New Zealand’s premier track has fuelled autumn aspirations across the Tasman for several stakes winners.

Xtravagant cemented his standing as a leading Australian Guineas contender with his comfortable win in a 1400m race for three-year-olds.

Co-trainer Stephen Autridge said the NZ 2000 Guineas winner would try to claim a second Group One win in the Levin Classic on January 16 after which he and Jamie Richards would work out the best path to the Australian Guineas at Flemington in March.

The Group One race on Saturday went to Kawi with trainer Allan Sharrock to target two more Group One races at home before a possible trip to Australia.

“We’ll give him a few days now and then get him ready for the 1400 at Te Rapa before tackling the mile at Otaki,” Sharrock told nzracing.co.

“After that well have a think about Australia as he could go to the Australian Cup in Melbourne or something in Sydney.”

Auckland trainer Danica Guy is not as familiar to Australians as Autridge or Sharrock but that might change if three-year-old filly Capella lived up to her trainer’s expectations.

Capella passed her biggest test with victory in the Group Two Eight Carat Classic at her fifth start.

“I would love to have a go at the ATC Oaks with her,” Guy said.

“It’s so pleasing to see her step up to this grade and win so well.

“She’s still a bit green, but I am really proud of her. She’s a very good filly.”

Guy will consider a quick back-up into the Group Two Royal Stakes at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day.
