Taj Rossi Series Final 2014: Zebulon continues on path towards Guineas

Peter Morgan has Caulfield Guineas aspirations for Zebulon but first hopes to land a late-season juvenile stakes win with the colt to make things easier in the spring.

Zebulon, an impressive last start Flemington winner, is among 15 nominations for Saturday’s Listed Taj Rossi Series Final (1600m).

Morgan was impressed with the colt’s last-start win and plans to run him in Saturday’s race at Flemington but will monitor the youngster’s work on Tuesday before committing to a start.

“We’re just keeping a close eye on him. I think he’s a good horse so we don’t really want to go there if he’s not 100 per cent. But at this stage we’re heading that way,” Morgan said.

Zebulon had little luck when second on debut at Werribee last month and then sat wide and sprinted quickly in the straight to win by 1-3/4 lengths over 1410m at Flemington on June 28.

Another victory on Saturday would help in planning his spring path as it should allow the colt to get into better class three-year-old races.

“You’re not going to get balloted out and you don’t have to go chasing your tail,” he said.

Morgan said Zebulon had always shown talent and the trainer was able to get a line through well-performed stablemate Eloping, who won two stakes races during her juvenile season and finished seventh in the Golden Slipper.

“He had his early jumpouts at the same time as she did and they were always on a little bit of a par,” Morgan, who trains in partnership with Craig Widdison, said.

“So we knew we always had something there.”

Morgan believes a step up to 1600m should not worry Zebulon and the trainer is looking to aim the son of All American at the Caulfield Guineas.

“He has shown all the attributes that he could be a Guineas horse,” Morgan said.

“That’s the race we’ll probably head for anyway. It becomes a bit different when spring comes along. A few horses jump out of the ground that you don’t know about, but at this stage he’s certainly a horse you would want to be heading that way.”
