News:

Leading trainer David Hayes has called for a synthetic track to be installed in the north-eastern region of country Victoria.

He made the comment after Wangaratta’s meeting on Thursday was abandoned and transferred to Wodonga next Tuesday.

Hayes tweeted through the Lindsay Park account that a synthetic track was desperately needed.

“We seem to lose more meetings/trials than are held in the north east during winter months,” Lindsay Park said.

With Wangaratta abandoned and the meeting transferred to Wodonga, Racing Victoria announced a replacement meeting on the Polytrack at Pakenham for Thursday.

Paul Bloodworth, RV’s racing operations manager, said Wangaratta was inspected on Tuesday and deemed unsuitable for racing after rain over the past week.

“We explored all possible options to retain the meeting in north-east Victoria but that was not possible,” he said.

“The entire race program that was scheduled at Wangaratta will be moved to Tuesday and it’s expected that the Wodonga track will dry out before then to provide north-east trainers and owners opportunities to race.”

RV is under no illusions that support for the Pakenham meeting on Thursday may be minimal.

Nominations close at 9am on Wednesday with acceptances at noon.

A minimum of six acceptors per race and a minimum of six races are needed for the meeting to go ahead.
