Solicit starts campaign in Expressway Stakes 2016

Throughout her career, Solicit has always raced at a high level but is still chasing a Group One win.

She begins what could be her final racing campaign in Saturday’s Group Two Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill with hopes high she can snare a top-level victory.

Trainer Gerald Ryan admits there are a couple of sharp sprinters to beat in her first-up assignment but is hoping Solicit’s residual fitness will be a factor.

The five-year-old finished second in a barrier trial last week won by comeback sprinter Our Boy Malachi at her first appearance since her Group Three Summoned Stakes at Sandown in mid-November.

“She didn’t have long in the paddock and has come back really well and happy,” Ryan said.

“The plan is to run in the Expressway, the Millie Fox and the Guy Walter before the Coolmore Classic.

“Our Boy Malachi looked pretty sharp the other day and will be hard to beat in the Expressway.”

The Hawkes Racing-trained Our Boy Malachi was not quite as sharp in a second trial at Warwick Farm on Monday when he was given an easy time by Tommy Berry at the back of the field after missing the start.

He has been off the scene since suffering a bleeding attack in the Doomben 10,000 in May last year.

After he served his mandatory three-month ban, the seven-year-old underwent surgery for a serious bout of colic.

Ryan has also entered three-year-old King’s Troop in the Expressway as well as a benchmark race over 1100 metres.

The 16 entries for the Expressway have already been reduced to 15 with co-trainer Peter Snowden to delay Pride Of Dubai’s comeback, deciding he is not yet ready to make his return.

The dual Group One winner missed the spring with bone bruising and is now slated to return in the Eskimo Prince Stakes on February 6.

Veteran sprinter Tiger Tees is the highest-rated horse among the Expressway nominations and with rain forecast for most of the week in Sydney, he will get conditions to suit.
