Trainer Robert Smerdon is hoping a barrier trial victory will help spark a return to form for Go The Knuckle.

After a disappointing first-up effort, the six-year-old is set to line up in the Christmas Stakes over 1200m at Sandown on Friday.

Go The Knuckle finished at the tail of the field, beaten more than six lengths, in the Christmas Cup (1000m) won by Danger Close at Sandown on December 6.

A trip to Tatura for an 1100m barrier trial 10 days later, when he recorded a four length victory, has Smerdon hopeful the gelding can turn his form around.

“He had a trial at Tatura and was good there, but against bad horses,” Smerdon said.

“He over-raced, was a bit fresh and didn’t finish it off in his first-up run.

“Hopefully with that run and the trial he’s closer to the mark and might be able to turn his form around.”

Smerdon’s confidence in Go The Knuckle being able get back to winning form stems from his ability in similar company.

Last preparation Go The Knuckle was successful first-up at Moonee Valley before going on to compete in Listed company.

Included in those efforts was a second over Friday’s course and distance in March when he was beaten 1-1/2 lengths by Office Bearer.

“He’s got to run in these types of races because he’s got such a high rating,” Smerdon said.

“On his day he’s a competitive horse and hopefully he’ll be back to somewhere near his best on Friday.”

Nick Hall, who rode the gelding on his return to racing almost three weeks ago, has the ride on Friday.
