Set Square has capped a meteoric rise with a fine staying performance to win the Group One VRC Oaks at Flemington.

Trainer by Ciaron Maher, the filly was having just her fourth start and only earned her place in the field when connections paid a late entry fee to run.

Set Square settled fifth on the fence trailing the speed for Hugh Bowman and came through towards the inside to outstay her rivals.

Bowman said he was concerned early when the filly took time to settle but once she got into a rhythm his confidence grew.

“When the pressure went on I was in the perfect spot to pounce and I was on the perfect horse to pounce with,” Bowman said.

“It’s the biggest week of the whole year and to be featuring again in a Group One is just unbelievable.”

Set Square defeated Thunder Lady, who ran on well from the back with Golconda third.

Lumosty was confidently backed into favouritism but after looming on the home turn she couldn’t sustain the effort and finished out of the placings.
