Rupee could run between 2014 Moir Stakes and Manikato Stakes

Lankan Rupee could have a race added to his Melbourne spring carnival campaign in between Group One assignments.

The star sprinter is an odds-on favourite to post his fourth Group One victory this year when he lines up in Friday night’s Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley.

His next scheduled start after the Moir is the Group One Manikato Stakes (1200m) at the same track on October 24.

However, trainer Mick Price is starting to think that having four weeks between runs might not be ideal for the gelding.

“I’ve just got a thought in my head whether the horse is going to do too well in between,” Price said.

“The horse is thriving at the moment and I think 28 days (in between races) might be a bit of overkill for him.”

Price will wait until after the Moir to decide whether to send Lankan Rupee into the Manikato without another run.

If he does have another start before then, the weight-for-age Schillaci Stakes over 1000m at Caulfield on October 11 is the most likely option.

A trip to Hong Kong for the International Sprint in December was recently ruled out for Lankan Rupee but the Winterbottom Stakes in Perth, held two weeks after the Group One Darley Classic at Flemington in November, remains on the table.
