News:

Jockey Blake Shinn has taken great satisfaction in partnering Madam Gangster to a first-up win for his family in the Cockram Stakes at Caulfield.

Madam Gangster, trained by Shinn’s stepfather Lee Hope and stepbrother Shannon Hope, resumed in Saturday’s Group Three race for mares and Shinn got her home by a short half head over Hazard in a driving finish.

Shinn labelled it a special win.

“It’s well-documented my family are going through a tough time recently and I’m sure this will help boost their spirits,” Shinn said.

“To come here today and get a win on a big day means the world to me.”

Lee and Shannon Hope will face the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board in Melbourne in October over charges surrounding elevated cobalt levels above the allowed threshold returned by three horses.

They will not collect any prize money from Madam Gangster’s win after opting not to appeal a stewards’ ruling this month to freeze the trainers’ percentage won in Group and Listed races in Victoria until the determination of the charges.

Shinn had Madam Gangster ($11) wide with cover and tracked Griante into the straight before allowing her to make a winning run.

Vezalay, the $3.80 favourite, raced on-speed and fought on well for third, another long neck away.

“The second horse challenged but I knew my horse kicked strongly and I thought she just got the bob in,” Shinn said.

“She’s come back in tremendous order.”

The Let’s Elope Stakes will be Madam Gangster’s next start.
