Beasley is riding trackwork for Gai Waterhouse, rekindling an association with the Randwick trainer that delivered nine Group One victories before he went to Singapore.

Six of those elite-level wins were on Grand Armee, a front-running galloper who made a name for himself as an outstanding weight-for-age horse.

And for Tulloch Lodge’s Mark Newnham it was a case of taking a step back in time when Beasley made the running on Ecuador in the horse’s return to winning form at Rosehill two weeks ago.

“When I was watching the race the other day and he was bowling along in front down the back straight, I was turning back the clock,” Newnham said.

Newnham said Beasley’s intimate knowledge of the Tulloch Lodge way with racehorses was an obvious asset to the stable.

“He knows the system, he knows what Gai wants so it was pretty easy for him to slot back in,” Newnham said.

Beasley gets the chance to do it all again on Ecuador when they take their place in the Schweppes Handicap on Saturday.

The five-year-old is a clear-cut favourite despite a 60.5kg impost as he tries to impress for a start in next month’s Grafton Cup.

“There’s not a lot on for him but if he was to get through Saturday we could possibly look at the Grafton Cup,” Newnham said.

“The idea so far was to just get him back winning because he had been a while off the scene.

“He did that and did it well, so if he can back that up there could be an eye towards Grafton.”
