News:

A solid race-day gallop by Griante at Moonee Valley has convinced trainer David Brideoake the mare deserves her chance at a Group One race in Sydney.

Brideoake confirmed Griante would head to Saturday’s Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill where she will be ridden by Craig Williams, replacing apprentice Harry Coffey.

Williams partnered the mare in her work-out between races on Monday.

After two trials, Griante finished 12th behind Flamberge and Fell Swoop in the Oakleigh Plate with those two sprinters among nominations for Saturday’s race.

“Craig was very happy and she was really strong in the last bit,” Brideoake said.

“She’s in good shape. She was an unlucky runner in the Oakleigh Plate and hopefully she’ll have a bit more luck in Sydney.

“We’re going up to run against the big wigs.”

Griante is no stranger to Sydney, winning the Wenona Girl Stakes at Randwick last March before returning to Melbourne and running second in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley.

She again returned to Sydney where she ran second to Avoid Lightning in the Sapphire Stakes at Randwick during The Championships.

Brideoake hasn’t ruled out running Griante in this year’s Group One William Reid but favours keeping her in Sydney for another tilt at the Sapphire Stakes.

“She won up there last year and ran second and has a shown a liking for that way of going,” he said.

“The horse’s racing pattern has really started to mature now, so we’ve got our fingers crossed.”

Brideoake said Griante was likely to be sent to Sydney on Wednesday and will be stabled at Rosehill.

A decision on whether Counterattack returns to Sydney, where he is entered for three races including The Galaxy, or is saved for the William Reid, will be made on Tuesday.

Counterattack, who was a late scratching from the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington on Saturday after dumping Glen Boss, also worked at Moonee Valley on Monday.

Fell Swoop is the $7 favourite in opening Galaxy markets.
