Regal Roller Stakes 2014: Jemerica chasing black type at Caulfield

The strength of a mares’ race at Caulfield has swayed trainer Mike Moroney to instead give Jemerica her shot at claiming valuable black type in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes.

Jemerica raced to an all-the-way win at Caulfield in an end-of-season three-year-old fillies’ race over 1200m.

Triple Group One winner Moment Of Change headlines the Regal Roller Stakes field on Saturday and is clearly the class runner but has to contend with 62kg.

He is giving up to 8kg to his rivals.

Last-start Bletchingly Stakes winner Thiamandi is a slight favourite at $3.50 ahead of Moment Of Change at $3.70.

The 1100m mares’ race is headlined by Group-winning sprinter Gregers who is a dominant favourite at $2.50.

“We were going to run in the mares’ race but it looked a bit stronger than the stakes race,” Moroney said.

“So being a mare we thought we’d give her a chance in that black-type race and see where she is at.”

Well-performed New Zealand entire El Roca was slated to return in the Regal Roller Stakes but was ruled out on Tuesday because of a temperature spike.

Moroney admitted El Roca’s defection also played a role in this decision to run in the Listed race.

Moment Of Change is unbeaten in four starts – all over 1400m – at his home track of Caulfield.

It’s a record which includes three Group One wins and he will progress to the Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield after Saturday.
