Peter Moody out for 12 months, back in six

Trainer Peter Moody says he was prepared for the ban that will see him have to sit out racing for the next six months.

Moody was on Thursday given a 12-month suspension by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board after Lidari returned a high reading to cobalt.

Six months of the ban is suspended for 12 months providing he does not commit an offence for a year.

The suspension starts at midnight on March 24 allowing Moody to race horses at the Golden Slipper meeting on Saturday.

Moody was found guilty on two charges but not guilty to the most serious of administering cobalt to Lidari to affect its performance.

Lidari finished second in the 2014 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington and was subsequently disqualified at Thursday’s hearing.

“I’m a bit numb really,” Moody said.

“I felt vindicated that I hadn’t cheated and what I’ve been penalised for is not having proper practices in place.

“Six months suspension gives me the possibility of saving my business in some way, shape or form.

“I’ll go home, have a talk to my wife and family and my legal team before I take the next step.

“I’ve always indicated I won’t go through an appeal process.

“This matter ended today and without speaking to people outside of here today, that’s the way I feel.”

Moody said there were 300 horses on his books that require a new stable while he serves his suspension.

He said he had had a great career out of racing and believed there was still an opportunity for him to come back.

“I’ve always said I’m not going to be a lifer when it comes to training but I certainly want to go out on my terms and not someone else’s,” he said.

“That’s not what has happened here today.”

Moody noted a suspension was a far better result because at 46 years of age he would be unemployable if he was disqualified.

He said he doubted whether he would again make it to the dizzy heights he enjoyed when Black Caviar was racing but he still had the desire to train.

“I can’t wait for my next winner, hopefully it’s tomorrow,” he said.
