Odds against Waller in 2014 Winter Stakes Field

Chris Waller will be looking for a contribution from one of his stable’s blue-collar gallopers to keep him on an unlikely course for a record-breaking season at Rosehill on Saturday.

Waller’s horses are once again out in force on his home track with 17 acceptors in six races, including a largely ignored quartet in the $100,000 Winter Stakes.

He will saddle up Tromso, Coup Ay Tee, Tougher Than Ever and Hidden Kisses in the Listed race as he takes aim at his Sydney record of 167-1/2 winners set in 2012-2013.

After racing at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, Waller has 153-1/2 winners with four meetings left.

Of Waller’s Winter Stakes four, Tougher Than Ever is the most favoured in first markets but he is an $11 chance in a race where last-start winners Generalife and Scream Machine, the $3.50 equal favourites, are expected to dominate.

By default, Waller is leaning to Coup Ay Tee as his best chance of causing an upset.

Coup Ay Tee is a Hawkesbury Gold Cup winner but he has raced just below the top level for most of his career while earning a more than respectable $500,000 in stakes.

“He’s not far away from his best form and he’s got a good draw for a change,” Waller said.

“It would be nice to see a slow track, even dead so there’s a few ticks getting next to his name.”

Coup Ay Tee is a $16 chance with Hidden Kisses at $13 and Tromso at $18.

Waller said Hidden Kisses was entitled to the benefit of doubt on her last-start seventh to Generalife in the Civic Stakes.

“I think her runs have been a bit better than her finishing positions suggest but she has to improve,” he said.

“You can forgive one run but you’d like to see her put in a good run on Saturday.”

Waller’s Rosehill representation includes five runners in the Bob Ingham Handicap, although he could be left with four starters because Fulgur is also a Flemington acceptor.

He will also have two-year-olds Harrier Jet and Double Happy trying to maintain the stable’s impressive run of end-of-season form in juvenile races.
