Ocean Embers ready to take on 2016 Schillaci Stakes Field

Ocean Embers

Ocean Embers has already made her mark at Shea Eden’s stable as the trainer’s first Group winner and is on a path that could reap even higher rewards.

The mare heads to the Group Two Schillaci Stakes off a last-start victory in the Group Three Cockram Stakes on August 27

Eden hopes Ocean Embers can then measure up to a start against the likes of Chautauqua, The Quarterback and co in the Darley Classic at Flemington on the final day of the Melbourne Cup carnival.

“I’m quietly confident she’ll measure up and then we’ll head to the Darley Classic,” Eden said.

“I think Flemington is a track that will suit. We have to take on the big guns but she’s lightly raced and we haven’t seen the best of her.

“This week is a Group Two, so for me it’s an important race and it’s great to be going there with a real live chance.

“At weight-for-age she gets in well at the weights while her sectionals and her times suggest she’s up to this level.”

The four-year-old has faced the starter on seven occasions, registering four wins.

Eden said Ocean Embers had been dogged by problems including surgery for a throat ailment and the removal of bone chips from both fetlock joints.

“We’ve been fortunate,” Eden said.

“The work she had done has been a real success but we treat her accordingly with plenty of ice while the throat surgery was a success so there’s not much more we have to do there.

“We’re in the spring now and there’s some really nice races ahead.”
