The Golden Rose is a relative newcomer to Group One ranks but has already stamped its importance on Australian breeders.

The Golden Slipper for two-year-olds has long been known as a stallion-making race with the Golden Rose for the new season’s three-year-olds gaining stature.

Denman won the Golden Rose in its first year at Group One level in 2009 with the son of Lonhro now standing alongside his father at Sheikh Mohammed’s Australian and American studs.

Three years later, the sheikh’s Epaulette beat Albrecht to win the Golden Rose and both are serving the southern hemisphere season at Darley in the Hunter Valley.

On Saturday, Lonhro’s sons Sarajevo and Kumaon will represent the sheikh at Rosehill in his royal blue Godolphin colours which replace the Darley maroon and white as part of a global rebranding of the racing operation.

“It is a very important race for us,” Godolphin racing manager Jason Walsh said.

“We have had two winners in the past and both are now stallions at Darley.”

The prospect of a wet track would give the stable a leaning to Kumaon over his stablemate.

“Kumaon gets through the ground well enough but Sarajevo not so much,” Walsh said.

“In saying that, we are very pleased with both of them.”

Arrowfield Stud proprietor John Messara also has high hopes Scissor Kick can perform as he hopes, he can add to the Redoute’s Choice line.

A multiple champion Australian sire, Redoute’s Choice stands at Arrowfield alongside his sons Snitzel and Not A Single Doubt and his half-brother Manhattan Rain.

“If he wins he will be a very desirable animal,” Messara said.

“He has the pedigree and the conformation to be a stallion and he is a progressive type”.”

Messara will also keep a keen eye on Scissor Kick’s rivals with Snitzel represented by Scratch Me Lucky and Ygritte while another Arrowfield stallion All American has Bachman in the race.

Darley stallions Shamardahl, Medaglia D’Oro and Street Sense will be represented by Better Land, Nostradamus and Hallowed Crown respectively, three of the most favoured runners.
