Mighty Like, Ringo provide stable quinella

Mick Price has a horse for the moment and one for the future after training the quinella in The Lola’s Gift Handicap at Flemington.

Ultra-consistent Mighty Like denied stablemate Ringo on Saturday to keep an unbeaten record since resuming.

Following a first-up win at Ballarat over 1200m last month, Mighty Like ($5.50) and stepped up to 1400m to beat the favourite Ringo ($4.60) by three quarters of a length with Garud ($21) a nose away third.

Price said Mighty Like had progressed through the grades in good fashion and was now ready to head to open company.

He said the lightly raced gelding was owned by breeder Julie Nicholson.

“If the owner still owns the dam then I think we’re obligated to try and get some black type,” Price said.

“This time of year he can go around in open handicaps but we don’t have any grand plans for him.

“I suppose if he can work his way up into a little bit of black type that would be fine.”

Jockey Dean Yendall said Mighty Like was an out-and-out trier.

“When he did get to the front he really put them away,” Yendall said.

While pleased that Mighty Fine was able to dig deep and hold off the chasing pack, Price was taken with performance of Ringo and believes the newcomer to his stable is in for a good preparation.

“A mile would be good for him,” Price said.

“Dwayne Dunn thought he had the other horse beaten but just didn’t know what happened.”

Connections made the right decision in electing to run Phantom Brew at Flemington.

The Colin Little-trained stayer was also engaged at Randwick but the owners decided to stay in Melbourne to contest the Western Health Cup (2000m).

Leading throughout under Glen Boss, Phantom Brew ($11) scored by a nose from perennial placegetter Extra Zero ($4) with Tuscan Fire ($9) a neck away third.

“The owners wanted him in Sydney as we thought the race here might have been a bit strong but they made the call to stay here,” Little said.
