Memsie Stakes: Boban heads Epsom Handicap 2014 entries

Last year’s winner Boban heads 10 entries from the Chris Waller stable for the Epsom Handicap at Randwick.

Run over the famous mile (1600m) at Sydney’s premier track, the $500,000 Epsom attracted 87 nominations on Monday including eight from Gai Waterhouse in her quest for an eighth win in the race.

Boban’s spring campaign will be dictated by the weather.

Waller opted not to run him in Saturday’s Warwick Stakes, instead diverting him to Caulfield for this week’s Group One Memsie.

Sydney’s premier trainer has 22 of the 87 nominations for the Metropolitan (2400m) which he won in 2011 with The Verminator.

High-profile mare La Amistad, a sister to three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva, is also in the mix for the Metropolitan.

The 96 three-year-olds entered for the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) are led by the Waterhouse-trained Almalad who begins his latest campaign in Saturday’s Run To The Rose at Rosehill.

Unbeaten in three starts, Almalad was the lone colt to win a Group One juvenile race last season, taking out the J J Atkins in Brisbane.

ATC Sires’ Produce winner Peggy Jean, one of the four fillies to win Group One races in 2013/14 is also entered for the Spring Champion.

The Epsom and the Metropolitan are at Randwick on October 4 with the Spring Champion a week later.
