Melbourne Cup 2016: Waller gets contender from Britain

Australia-bound stayer Regal Monarch has signed off his British career with victory at Pontefract.

The winner of four races from 2400 to 2600 metres for trainer Mark Johnston, Regal Monarch will join the Chris Waller stable in Sydney to be prepared for the 2016 Sydney and Melbourne carnivals.

Regal Monarch races in the colours of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing which also has Sydney Cup runner-up Libran with Waller.

“He’s just a lovely, genuine horse and he’s off to Australia now,” Paul Morrison of part-owners East Layton Stud, said.

“Highclere have bought him. We still own a quarter share in him.

“He’s off Down Under for two carnivals – the Sydney carnival and the Melbourne carnival. He’s going to be trained by Chris Waller.

“We ran him at Newmarket when Highclere were involved as well. Harry Herbert has been really kind and let us run him twice.

“The plan has always been to send him to Australia.”

Waller is likely to try and target the 2016 Melbourne Cup with Regal Monarch.
