A New Zealand horse named for an American TV star with a cult following will be out to boost his own fan club when he has his next start in Australia.

Unbeaten in six starts including the Group Two Rich Hill Mile at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day, Hasselhoof will head to Sydney next month with trainer Donna Logan keen to see how he measures up.

He will tune up for the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) at Rosehill on February 20 with a 1600m race at Randwick two weeks earlier.

“The only option for him here was 2200 metres but he’s still too sharp for that,” Logan said.

“So we decided to bypass that race and bring him to Sydney to test things out.

“It gives us an opportunity to see how he copes with the travelling and all that goes with it.

“He is a very exciting horse but still quite immature.”

Like his namesake David Hasseloff in Baywatch, the four-year-old spends much of his time training on the beach.

He was almost lost to the southern hemisphere after his second start but a group of high-profile racing identities, including Sir Patrick Hogan, banded together to keep him in New Zealand.

Sir Patrick’s Cambridge Stud stands Hasselhoof’s sire Tavistock whose most famous progeny are last season’s Logan-trained Rosehill Guineas winner Volkstok’n’barrell and the 2015 Victoria Derby winner Tarzino.

Volkstok’n’barrell was unplaced in five Melbourne Group One races in the spring but Logan said he had bounced back from a rare asthmatic complaint diagnosed when he returned home.

The four-year-old will run in the Group One Waikato Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa on February 13 before any Australian races are considered,

“We will see he performs first before we think about taking him back to Australia,” Logan said.
