Mamwaazel wins Belle Of The Turf Stakes 2015

Jockey Glyn Schofield was thankful for Mamwaazel’s intractability as the Chris Waller-trained mare posted the first black-type win of her career in the Belle Of The Turf Stakes.

Mamwaazel just got the better of the favourite Peace Force to win the Group Three race at Gosford by a short head and Schofield said it was by accident more than design he was able to time his winning run so precisely.

“I didn’t want to eye-ball Peace Force too much because she is a real fighter,” Schofield said.

“Fortunately my filly didn’t corner so well and I got a little bit further away in the straight from Peace Force and we might have blindsided her a bit”.

After finishing second to Peace Force at Canterbury at their most recent clash, Mamwaazel carried $7 to $5.50 backing as Peace Force ($3.20) was easy in betting.

Mary Lou ($5) raced behind the leaders before swinging around heels on the turn to take the minor placing, a length further back.

Mamwaazel’s victory, her fourth in a 25-start career, was Waller’s first in the fillies and mares feature.

Her win came after leading jockey Hugh Bowman left an early impression on the Gosford Gold Cup meeting when he rode the first three winners.

Bowman’s first two winners came on horses for two Randwick-based training partnerships.

He led all the way on Princefamous for Peter and Paul Snowden before bringing Kinagat down the centre of the track for Bart and James Cummings.

Bowman completed his treble when he controlled the tempo to win on Harry Hotspur for Wyong trainer Kim Waugh.
