Luke Nolen almost ready to leave hospital

Injured jockey Luke Nolen expects to leave hospital in the next couple of days but has not set a date for his return to riding.

Despite suffering a broken left collar bone, shoulder and several ribs as well as a bruised spleen and liver, Nolen says he has no thoughts of giving up his profession.

Best known for his association with champion Black Caviar, Nolen was hit by another horse as he lay on the ground after falling from Miss Promiscuity in last Saturday’s Group One Robert Sangster Stakes at Morphettville.

The accident happened just 40 minutes after Nolen won the Australasian Oaks on Abbey Marie, his first Group One win since he returned from a long recuperation from back surgery.

“I’m a little bit sore but in good spirits,” Nolen told Melbourne radio station RSN.

“I’m hopeful to get discharged on Saturday. I can’t fly and have to get road transport home (to Melbourne).”

Nolen said he could not remember much about the fall but said it was part and parcel of riding.

“We work in a very dangerous sport,” he said. “These sorts of injuries happen from time to time.

“I was lucky not to sustain any life-changing injuries.

“What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.

“I was in good form before the accident so hopefully I can get back to racing and continue that form.”

Nolen said doctors’ opinions were varied on when he might be able to return to riding and he would consult his own physician when he returned to Melbourne.
