After missing the chance to qualify for the Melbourne Cup, English horse Lord Van Percy is set to run at Sandown this week.

The Andrew Balding-trained stayer needed to win the Lexus Stakes to grab a spot in last Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup but was a race-morning scratching due to lameness in his off foreleg.

At his only start in Australia, Lord Van Percy ran fifth, just behind Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist, in the Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield on October 11.

Part-owned by OTI Racing, Lord Van Percy has the option of running in either the Zipping Classic (2400m) or the Sandown Cup (3200m) on Saturday after which further international options will be determined.

Simon O’Donnell of OTI said Lord Van Percy had recovered from his lameness and was on target for a run at Sandown.

Balding has indicated he would like to take Lord Van Percy back to Europe and target the Dubai Gold Cup (3200m) on World Cup night in March.

“It is something we have to still work out,” O’Donnell said.

“It looks like we will run him in the mile-and-a-half race (Zipping Classic) next Saturday and work out what to do after that.

“Andrew has indicated he would like to take him back with him and take him to Dubai and that is something we will have a think about.”

Fellow OTI campaigner Au Revoir is likely to stay in training under French trainer Andre Fabre’s name in the immediate future before he is transferred to Peter Moody.

Au Revoir finished eighth in the Melbourne Cup and OTI is thinking of taking the son of Singspiel to Hong Kong for the Hong Kong Vase (2400m) in December.
