Cult mare Little Brown Horse can earn herself another season of racing if she runs well in the Listed Tattersall’s Mile at Doomben.
Little Brown Horse has a big following among rank and file punters because she is tiny but always gives her all in her races.
She has had 52 starts for 12 wins and 14 minor placings earning $312,000 in prize money.
However, the one thing missing from her record is a stakes win, although she has been placed twice at black type level.
At a rising seven years of age, trainer Kelly Doughty believes she has another season of racing left and her performance in Saturday’s Listed race will define the future.
“At this stage we are planning for her to race on into next season,” Doughty said.
“We will make a final decision after Saturday’s race.”
“I know she was well beaten in stakes company at two recent runs (Bright Shadow Quality and Gai Waterhouse Classic) but there were excuses in those runs.”
“It was much more like her true form when she was a nose second to Trakstar at the Sunshine Coast two weeks ago.”
“That was her first start at 1600 metres and the winner is pretty smart. It gives us hope she will run a very strong 1600 around Doomben.”
Apprentice Geoff Goold has retained the ride on Little Brown Horse who has drawn barrier four on Saturday.
“Geoff knows exactly how to ride her. She needs to settle early in her races with cover and the four barrier should be perfect for her,” Doughty said.
Meanwhile, trainer Brian Smith has delayed the return of classy galloper Kingdoms until next week and will rely on last year’s winner Jetset Lad in the Tattersall’s Mile.
Kingdoms, who was placed in the ATC Metropolitan and Kingston Town Stakes last year, is now pencilled in to return in the Anniversary Handicap at the Sunshine Coast next week.
Jetset Lad beat Kingdoms in the 2014 Tattersall’s Mile and has since won the Group Two Brisbane Cup.
He will carry top weight of 58.5kg in the Tatt’s Mile.
“The southern horses have gone for this season so Jetset Lad has gone up in the weights which is always a test,” Smith said.
Kingdoms and Jetset Lad are both being set for another Sydney spring carnival campaign.
