Dunlite Handicap 2014: Laing starts over with promising Boomwaa

After a stable virus ruined plans for his spring team, trainer Robbie Laing is looking forward to the upcoming summer months.

Promising three-year-old Boomwaa makes his reappearance in the Dunlite Handicap (1000m) at Sandown on Saturday after a spring campaign aborted after three runs.

Laing has gone back to basics with the gelding.

Like stablemate Lord Of The Sky, and to a lesser extent Victoria Oaks placegetter Golconda, Boomwaa suffered a virus that laid the majority of Laing’s team low.

Laing was expecting Boomwaa to play a role during the spring but after the third run of his campaign, when 10th in the McNeil Stakes at Caulfield on August 30, connections aborted plans they hoped would see the gelding contest the Caulfield Guineas.

“The biggest surprise about his last prep was how well he went first and second up when he looked terrible,” Laing said.

“He didn’t winter well, he was a lot lighter than what he was as a two-year-old and I warned the owners before his first-up run at Moonee Valley not to expect much.

“But he ran well and was equally as brave second-up and then at his next start it all came crashing down on him.

“He couldn’t eat, he was listless so he went to the paddock.”

Laing said Boomwaa spelled well and was a different horse.

Now Laing wants to get Boomwaa back into winning form before starting to think about the bigger races on offer during the autumn.

“He’s a horse that’s had a dozen starts and only one win,” Laing said.

“Our main aim is to win some races and every Saturday race is worth $80,000.

“I said to the owners `let’s not go thinking Australian Guineas just yet, lets get a few wins on the board and then we may be able lift our sights’.”
