Kiwi mare out to give Fradd timely boost

He’s ridden with success in nine countries during a decorated career but South African jockey Robbie Fradd now wants to call Australia home.

“My travelling days are gone. I’ve done it so many times,” Fradd said.

Fradd, a Hong Kong premiership-winning jockey just before compatriot Douglas Whyte started his sequence of 13 consecutive titles in the Asian racing capital, moved to Queensland at the start of the 2014-2015 season.

He admits it’s been a struggle to gain a foothold in Brisbane racing but his luck could be about to change with his only Doomben ride on Saturday.

Fradd counts wins in the famous Durban July Handicap, the Hong Kong Derby, the Singapore Derby and the Yasuda Kinen among his best.

His ride on New Zealand mare Tarloshan could help shape his immediate future.

“It’s not easy here. I’m not getting many rides and only average rides,” he said.

Fradd links with Tarloshan in the Just Now Quality, knowing the mare will have the conditions to advance her chances in the Listed race for fillies and mares.

Tarloshan left her mark during a brief NSW autumn and winter campaign with two wins.

Her Warwick Farm victory came on a heavy track and similar going is tipped for Doomben after 45mm of rain fell on the track in the 24 hours up to a 10.30am track inspection on Friday.

“Obviously the rain has come at the right time so that’s good because she’s going to enjoy that,” Fradd said.

“With the amount of rain we are having it’s going to put her into the race because it’s going to be wet no matter what.”

Tarloshan has almost halved her quote to be on the second line of Just Now betting behind last-start Sydney winner Commanding Wit.

Magic Millions Classic favourite Wicked Intent is the short-priced favourite to resume on a winning note in the Phelan Ready Stakes.

But trainer Barry Mitchell will wait until race morning before deciding if the colt is given his chance to make it three wins from as many starts.
