Inglis Classic 2014 day Tips – Randwick racecourse

Randwick is where Sydney racing will take place this Saturday, with the headline event being the $250,000 Inglis Classic (1200m), with the intriguing runner being boom kiwi gelding Vinnie Eagle, who was a most impressive winner of the Eclipse Stakes at Ellerslie on New Years Day.

Race One: Australian Turf Club Handicap (80) 1400m Form Guide

Back Me: Looks a good race for Breakfast In Bed (Best Odds: $3.50), who tried her guts out last time out when a close up third to I’ve Got The Looks. I think with a more conservative ride, she can finish the race off much better and is the one to beat.
Big Danger: Jacinta (Best Odds: $4.00) was crying out for further than 1200m and she got that at Kensington last time out when well backed and duly saluting. Bolted in first up at Canberra, then placed behind Arrowette at Canterbury, then at Randwick ran third to Target In Sight, who ran well on Magic Millions Day. She is at her best when she has a bunny to chase, and she should get that from the beautiful draw.
Roughie: Pillow Talk (Best Odds: $5.00) was the lucky runner at Canterbury who had everything go her way two back. Fast tempo and clear air ensured that he finished over the top of her rivals. It was a bunched finished, but several horses behind him in that race have since gone on to perform very well. She then went to Kensington and wasn’t suited by the slow tempo set by Our Celladoor, who walked them in front and sprinted, which didn’t suit this mare given she had 58.5kg. Drops to the minimum here, so I’d give her another chance.

Race Two: 2014 ATC Membership On Sale Handicap (75) 1200m Form Guide

Back Me: Best bet on the card for me here in the shape of Ike’s Legacy (Best Odds: $8.00). I am really shocked that $6.50 is on offer, but that can be put down to the huge boom on our big danger. This colt won impressively on debut at Warwick Farm, freshened up and ran in the Run To The Rose where it was a case of too much too soon. Spelled, trialled twice, and wowee…he has looked like his mum, former top mare Ike’s Dream. My suggestion would be to back him now, because I have no doubt he’ll be shorter once the gates crash back.
Big Danger: The boom on Atmospherical (Best Odds: $2.40) is pretty big after two most impressive wins at Kembla and Randwick, in particular the latter. When asked to chase down the leader, she found an extra gear and ran away late, a sign of a very good horse. I just the top tip is in for a very exciting prep.
Roughie: Woodbine (Best Odds: $3.50) is one of the better bred gallopers racing at the moment, being by Hussonet out of former champion mare Miss Finland. Had two runs during the Spring, with a dominant maiden win at Hawkesbury followed up by a fighting third to Earnest Desire and Chateau Lafaite, both of which are well above average. Liked the way this one has trialled, and will be winning nice races.

Race Three: Gardenia Handicap 1400m Form Guide

Back Me: Where there is smoke, there is fire, so the fact that Red Excitement (Best Odds: $3.50) has been crunched from $5 into $4.40 indicates that he will go very close. Excellent first up run behind subsequent stakes winner Emblems, then shouldered 61.5kg for a gallant third to Turbulent Jet. Tumbles down to 54kg now, is a winner at Randwick, and doesn’t take on a strong bunch.
Big Danger: Mecir (Best Odds: $3.50) took a little while to wind up last start at Rosehill, but once he eventually got there, he surged late and powered through the line. The Randwick 1400m looks perfect, rock hard fit, hard to beat.
Roughie: We had liked My Destiny (Best Odds: $9.50) in each of his runs this time in, but he was disappointing. So he stepped up to stakes company in the Takeover Target at Gosford and almost caused the boilover when a narrow third to Emblems. Now that he has found some form, he can go on with it.

Race Four: Inglis Classic 1200m Form Guide

Back Me: Going for a bit of value here with Uratta Belle (Best Odds: $24.00). Her two career runs to date have been faultless. On debut ran third to Echo Gal and I Am Snippety, then was a closing fourth to Fighting Sun, second favourite for the Golden Slipper, after settling well back. I can see her getting three wide cover, midfield, peeling out at the top of the straight and hitting the line strongly. One thing in her favour is that she will appreciate the 1200m.
Big Danger: Boomwaa (Best Odds: $2.20) is the form horse going into the race, having won the Maribyrnong and finishing second to Fighting Sun after doing the work outside the speed. Just a question mark at him running 1200m, but drawn well and Bowman on board will assist.
Roughie: Don’t underestimate this kiwi galloper Vinnie Eagle (Best Odds: $4.00). He was a top winner first up at Ellerslie in the Eclipse Stakes, running fast time, which compared well to the Group 1 run over the same distance later on in the day. He can jump and find a spot, so don’t be too concerned by the barrier. Legitimate chance.

Race Five: Tab Rewards Handicap (85) 2000m Form Guide

Back Me: Looks pretty straight forward here – Laidback Larry (Best Odds: $1.75) wins. Had trialled brilliantly prior to his dominant first up win over the 1550m at Canterbury, aided by a gun ride from Tim Clark, before rising to the Randwick mile and toying with his rivals. Up to 2000m looks ideal, should lead comfortably again and prove a tough nut to crack.
Big Danger: Longshoreman (Best Odds: $6.00) is definitely looking for further now and he gets that here. Looked to travel sweetly in the run last start at Rosehill, and at the top of the straight he looked as if he was going to go straight past them, but he was very one paced and just grinded to the line solidly, so 2000m looks ideal.
Roughie: Diamond Jim (Best Odds: $19.00) supporters have been teased by him now twice this time in. He has looked very good in each hitout, and on the minimum, third up…he is the sort of horse who could bob up and win this.

Race Six: Tab iPhone App Handicap (75) 1400m Form Guide

Back Me: Specific Choice (Best Odds: $3.50) has had a little break in order to get the snip snip job, which could be the making of this horse if his trial is anything to go by. Loved the way he sat back and cruised to the line under a hold whilst making up ground. The key to him is off the pace. Ride him back, get him to the outside and watch him go.
Big Danger: Two rock hard runs this time in will make sure that Almighty Charge (Best Odds: $3.50) is primed to the minute for this race. Looked the winner last start, but was grabbed in the last couple of strides by Turbulent Jet. Nash back on, drawn well, should lead comfortably and take a power of beating.
Roughie: Misty Eyes (Best Odds: $14.00) is now in Sydney after running some competitive races in Adelaide in some handy races. Hasn’t raced since an eye catching firth in stakes company on Boxing Day, so has the form on the board, and is drawn the paint.

Race Seven: The Percy Sykes Tribute Handicap (85) 1600m Form Guide

Back Me: Longeron (Best Odds: $2.50) couldn’t have been ridden better by young Moloney at Flemington last time out, but was grabbed right on the peg by Olly and Murcielaga. Unbeaten at the mile, senior rider back on board, third up…no excuses.
Big Danger: Rowie (Best Odds: $6.00) has been excellent since being gelded. Bolted in first up at Kensington, then had to sustain a long run at Rosehill yet hit the line as well as anything else in a race dominated by the leader and eventual winner Two Blue. Draws to sit much closer now and is a serious threat.
Roughie: This is just about D-Day for Jacquinot Bay (Best Odds: $9.00) for mine. Excellent first up run in the Starlight behind Zaratone, but has been off in two subsequent runs. 1600m now, away from Rosehill, good gate…this run will tell us where he is at and whether or not he deserves another crack at blacktype.

Race Eight: Vinery Yearlings Handicap (80) 1100m Form Guide

Back Me: Punters should end the day on the right note courtesy of Charge Account (Best Odds: $2.40), having his first run for David Vandyke. Was last seen at Rosehill in the Fireball in March last year where he finished fifth to Catkins, a Group 1 placegetter. Trialled twice to prepare for this and has been outstanding in each. $2.70 looks pretty good.
Big Danger: Agent (Best Odds: $7.50) is a very good fresh horse, and I didn’t mind his trial the other day at Rosehill where he hit the line under a hold, finishing midfield. Drawn awkwardly, but if the pace is on, he’ll be winding up hard late like our roughie.
Roughie: Shivarchi (Best Odds: $11.00), due to his racing pattern, will receive more bad luck than good luck, as we have seen in a couple of runs since his brilliant first up win at Kembla. He’ll get back, hoping the speed is hot before unleashing late.
