Racing News:

Chad Schofield has lost his appeal against an improper riding ban that will sideline him for the early part of the Melbourne spring carnival.

The young rider fronted the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary (RAD) Board on Friday to challenge a 32-meeting suspension handed down by stewards at Mornington on September 17.

Solicitor Paul O’Sullivan represented Schofield at the hearing but was unable to persuade the RAD Board to overturn the stewards’ decision.

The RAD Board also dismissed Schofield’s appeal against the severity of the penalty.

Schofield will miss several key meetings including Turnbull Stakes day at Flemington on October 4 and the Caulfield Guineas program a week later before returning for Caulfield Cup day on October 18.

The ban stemmed from his ride on Saguaro at Mornington when stewards alleged he turned his horse’s head in when in a three-wide position without cover passing the 1100m and twice made contact with Michelle Payne’s mount Something To Share.

Stewards said Payne was eventually forced back to the fence.

RAD chairman Judge Russell Lewis found Schofield deliberately applied pressure to Payne’s mount and that his actions were potentially dangerous.

Schofield has experienced a roller-coaster ride over the past 12 months.

He won four Group One races last season, highlighted by a Cox Plate victory on Shamus Award.

However, he also spent two months sidelined by a neck injury and several stints out of the saddle due to careless riding bans.

It is believed Schofield will weight up a further appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
