Leading trainer Tony Gollan has had a bumper season for two-year-old winners but he believes he has saved one of the best for last with maiden galloper Yeager.

The clash between Gollan’s Yeager and Michael Nolan’s Jumbo Prince in the BMAG Hcp (1600m) shapes as one of the highlights of the Eagle Farm meeting on Saturday.

Yeager stormed home at his first start to finish second over 1110m at Doomben then again caught the eye with his fast-finishing third in an open maiden at Eagle Farm two weeks ago.

Gollan started Yeager in the open event because it was over 1400m and a perfect lead up to Saturday’s race.

“I really thought Yeager’s effort in that race was the run of the race,” Gollan said.

“The race wasn’t run to suit him and he had to make a very long run to get into it.

“The fact he was still coming on the line is a real indication of his ability.”

Gollan has put blinkers on Yeager and he believes it will make the gelding run more truly.

“I think you will see the best of him on Saturday. We have planned all along to put the blinkers on this run,” he said.

Gollan will wait until after Saturday’s race before deciding on future plans for Yeager.

“I have made no secret of the wrap I have on him. The only thing certain is he is going for a spell after Saturday’s run,” Gollan said.

“But we will wait until after that run to look long-term. Whether there is a trip in him just yet remains to be seen.”

Gollan has had eight individual two-year-old winners this season including Looks Like The Cat and Traveston Girl who have both been earmarked for spring campaigns in the southern states.

Meanwhile, Nolan confirmed Saturday’s race would be Jumbo Prince’s grand final this campaign.

Jumbo Prince, who cost $8000, has won three of his eight starts.

Nolan has booked in-form apprentice Luke Tarrant for the ride, replacing the suspended Ruby Rose.

“Luke’s claim means he gets in with only 56.5kg and as the winner of three races he is giving a maiden like Yeager only 2kg,” Nolan said.

Jumbo Prince is the $3 favourite in early markets, just ahead of Yeager at $3.40.
