Golden Slipper Tips – 2014 user-friendly edition

There are plenty of long, boring and over detailed previews for today’s Golden Slipper online so i have cut to the chase and give my thoughts on each of the runners in two simple sentence so you can read it quickly, easily and not go through five coffees whilst doing so.

View my summary of each of the sixteen runners in today’s Golden Slipper Stakes.

1. Unencumbered (13) – Craig Williams – Best Odds: $17 at Bet365.com.au

Summary: Magic Millions Classic winner, early maturing saw him win some good races but won’t improve as much as a few others here. Failed on a rain affected track when well beaten by Mossfun, won’t turn the tables so he can’t win here but could be a top five prospect.

2. Jabali (1) – Glen Boss – Best Odds: $41 at Bet365.com.au

Summary: Ran well in the Blue Diamond Prelude and backed that up in the Diamond itself behind Earthquake. Draws well, has the ability and could be a blowout chance at the odds so include him at the odds.

3. Ghibellines (2) – Hugh Bowman – Best Odds: $14 at Sportingbet.com.au

Summary: Has been there about in all of his races, the best came last start in the Todman Stakes. Looks one to be improving more than most and could continue to do so here but at the odds i am happy to risk him.

4. Valentia (4) – Tommy Berry – Best Odds: $26 at Sportsbet.com.au

Summary: I would love to see Tommy win this for his brother but i don’t give him much of a chance and he will start under the odds. Sentimental tip of the day but i will be leaving him out.

Bring Me The Maid

5. Cornrow (8) – Damian Oliver – Best Odds: $18 at Centrebet

Summary: One of two maidens in the race, he has hit the line well in each of his five starts but he hasn’t won one of them so he won’t be changing that here. Perhaps a Sires Produce Stakes prospect.

6. Law (7) – Tim Clark – Best Odds: $101 at Sportsbet.com.au

Summary: Has been backed from $151 into $101.. The bookies will hope the money continues for him because he can’t win.

7. Modoc (3) – Blake Shinn – Best Odds: $201 at Sportsbet.com.au

Summary: Jumps from a good barrier… mmm That’s it.

8. Risen From Doubt (6) – Nash Rawiller – Best Odds: $51 at Luxbet.com.au

Summary: At the odds i really like this Gelding, he was super impressive on debut and has had excuses in his last two runs. Nash takes the ride and from barrier 6 will get a good run throughout, a horse you need to include at big odds.

9. Earthquake (12) – Keiran Mcevoy – Best OddsL $3.20 at Bet365.com.au

Summary: The horse to beat in the race but the notable drift in betting and issues regarding her fitness during the weak cause some doubt. Has done nothing wrong in her four starts and could very well stay undefeated today.

10. Mossfun (11) – James McDonald – Best Odds: $4.25 at Bet365.com.au

Summary: One of the main reasons Earthquake has been such a drifter in the market is due to Mossfun being heavily backed including one punting having $50k on her. Has good wet track form and a lot of talent although she doesn’t represent any value anymore.

11. Oakleigh Girl (10) – Craig Newitt – Best Odds: $19 at Sportsbet.com.au

Summary: Likely one of the front runners in the race and will make her own luck, in big 2yo fields this is always a bonus. She isn’t the most talented horse in the field but she will do things right and if the others don’t she could steal the race.

12. Eloping (14) – Stephen Baster – Best Odds: $71 at Luxbet.com.au

Summary: Won by a big margin at Bendigo last start but i could have probably run a place in that race. Definitely over the odds when you look at her runs against Bring Me The Maid and Earthquake and could be a first four prospect if she runs to her very best.

13. Alpha Miss (9) – Jason Collett – Best Odds: $26 at Sportsbet.com.au

Summary: There would be no better story than seeing a trainer like Gary Nickson with a $6,000 filly beat the training goliaths in a race worth $3.5m and i give him a very good chance in doing so. Alpha Miss was unlucky not to have finished closer to Earthquake last start and she is a winner, with some luck in the race and some bad luck to a few other key races she is in with a big chance.

14. Bring Me The Maid – Chad Schofield – Best Odds: $9.50 at Luxbet.com.au

Summary: My top tip for the race but her chances will be determined by the track bias on the day. I think with the early speed in the race and a deteriorating track near the rail she can come wide and her turn of foot i think is the best in the race, money has come for her which has seen her shorten from $12 into $8.50.

15. Memorial (16) – Christian Reith – Best Odds: $67 at Sportsbet.com.au

Summary: Put a line through her last run which people doing the form should and she starts at half the current odds. It is a risk backing her because she was very disappointing last start but i think she can bounce back and run a big race here, one at odds to include.

16. Believe Yours (15) – Brenton Avdulla – Best Odds: $67 at Bet365.com.au

Summary: Outside of Earthquake she is the only other unbeaten runner going into the race. She steps up a lot in class here but she has passed both the tests she has been given and that is all you can ask, massive odds and a good each way chance.
