1. EPAULETTE

The winner of the Black Opal as a 2yo returned to racing this season a fortnight ago in the “Run To The Roses” where he finished third (beaten 2.6) behind Pierro. Solid enough first up and will have taken benefit from that hit-out but interestingly McEvoy, who rode him last start has opted to stick with stable-mate Albrecht instead.

Epaulette makes up one of the two Darley starters in today's Golden Rose

2. AMORINO

Showed plenty of promise as an early 2yo winning his first two races but was a few lengths off the pace in three big 2yo races before being spelled. Returned to racing at Caulfield a fortnight ago and from his wide draw, got back in race dominated by leader. Finished off well and from his handy draw, expect him to be in a far more prominent position today.

3. YOUR SONG

Had won two of three starts before running second to Pierro in the Run To The Roses at his latest outing. Got back on the occasion and saved ground by sticking to the fence. That was his first run since July so expect improvement but will be giving most a start again here.

4. KABAYAN

Progressive type of colt by Haradasun who, narrowly missed claiming a Group 1 when a lip second to Sizzling in the T J Smith in Brisbane in June. His only run since was an eye-catching effort in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes at Caulfield a fortnight ago. Draws ideally here, has Gai’s number one Jockey aboard and will have no doubt improved on his last start. Should be hard to beat.

5. NINTH LEGION

Stable-mate to Your Song who has ran fourth at his most recent efforts – the G3 San Domenico (beaten 3.3) and Run To The Roses (beaten 2.7). Wasn’t a bad effort last start, settling at the tail and hooking wide on the turn in a race dominated by those up front. Stepping up to the 1400m and being third up, he might settle a little closer today and at $17.00 in early markets, not to be underestimated.

6. ALBRECHT

The second of Darley’s representatives who took out the Up and Coming Stakes (G3) at his most recent start three weeks back. Third in that race “Tatra” won the Listed Ming Dynasty last week. Hasn’t been dealt any favours in the barrier draw here and McEvoy will need to produce another top ride to ensure Albrecht is afforded his best chance.

7. ASHOKAN

Led the field when resuming in the Run To The Roses before folding up in the straight and finishing last beaten 3 ¼. From his inside draw expect him to be one of the leaders again today but will need to improve significantly on his latest effort. Only win to date has been on Slow going.

8. SHAMEXPRESS

A lightly raced O’Reilly colt from the Danny O’Brien yard in Melbourne who, at his fourth career start, hit the line well to finish a long neck third in the McNeil Stakes at Caulfield a fortnight ago. Such an encouraging effort it was, connections decided to part with the late entry fee to ensure his position in the field. Will get back but should be doing best work late.

9. DOUBTFILLY

QLD filly who, in her 2yo season, went from a Townsville win on debut to fourth in the Golden Slipper in the space of eight runs. She’s on the quick back-up here after finishing fifth (beaten 6.3) in the G2 Furious Stakes. Just held her spot in that race and whilst drawn to get her chance here, will need to improve.

10. NECHITA

Fastnet Rock filly from the Patinack Farm team that has certainly created an impression with her two starts to date. On debut in June, she won a 2yo Open race by 3.5 and then backed that up three weeks ago with a 1 ¾ win in the Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes. Taking on the boys for the first time but appears to have a tonne of natural ability.

OVERVIEW

Pace to come from Doubtfilly, Ashokan and fancy Albrecht might try his luck from a wide gate and look for a spot handy. Leading the market are Nechita ($2.20) and Kabayan ($4.20) and both should get their chance from their respective draws and both should figure predominately in the finish. Slight leaning to the colt Kabayan at the better price. He’s a progressive type and will only need a touch of luck from the gate to make his presence felt. For the trifecta placings, think Ninth Legion and the Shamexpress will be finishing hard and at $17.00 and $11.00 respectively, may add some value to the exotics.
