A wide barrier has cost Hallowed Crown his place as the equal market leader for the Golden Rose but co-trainer James Cummings is unperturbed.
Bring Me The Maid retained her price of $4.60 after drawing gate six with Hallowed Crown easing slightly to $5 after coming up with 14 in Saturday’s 15-horse field.
Cummings trains in partnership with his famous grandfather Bart and the Golden Rose is one of the few Group One races yet to appear on the legend’s record.
Hallowed Crown is unbeaten in three starts and with rain forecast in Sydney over the next few days, he will get the surface to suit.
“He hasn’t run on a firm track yet but I think he would be as effective,” Cummings said.
“It doesn’t look like that will happen though and he has proved how well he handles wet tracks.
“It was a heavy eight at Rosehill this morning so with the track being wet I would be confident our horse will hit the line, the others not so much so.
“If it dries out then we’ve got to prove we can do it on top of the ground but I have faith he can.”
Hallowed Crown is by Street Sense out of Crowned Glory who looked to have the 2000 Golden Slipper in her keeping until Belle Du Jour edged her out.
Her son was not pushed to the Slipper, having two starts in March and April.
He came into Golden Rose reckoning when he produced a devastating finish in the Run To The Rose leaving Golden Rose rivals Kumaon, Ygritte and Sarajevo in his wake.
“He is very unseasoned and that hasn’t counted against him so far,” Cummings said.
“He’s bombproof and very malleable to racing and has got a great attitude to the game.”
Hallowed Crown will be ridden by Hugh Bowman who has won the race three times since its inception in 2003 but not since its elevation to Group One level five years ago.
Golden Slipper placegetter Bring Me The Maid is one of two runners for trainer Peter Moody with Better Land safely in after earlier fears he would miss out if there was a capacity field.
Moody’s gamble not to start him again after his luckless fourth in the Up and Coming Stakes paid off when the field came up short of its maximum 18.
Better Land, to be ridden by Blake Shinn from barrier 10, is a $7 chance alongside Nostradamus who will be diverted to the Danehill Stakes in Melbourne if the track is wet.
Press Report is the $101 outsider of the field but will provide a significant milestone in the career of apprentice Winona Costin when the 19-year-old has her first Group One ride.
