Golden Rose Tips:

Caulfield trainer Peter Moody won the first Group 1 race of the season a fortnight ago with Dissident in the Memsie Stakes and looks well placed to claim the two feature races on offer this week as well, making it a perfect start to the season. At Flemington Dissident heads the market in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes in at Rosehill’s Golden Rose feature, Moody has Bring Me The Maid, current favourite for the race at $4.00 and for good measure, third pick Better Land ($7.00).

If successful, Bring Me The Maid will be the first filly to win the race since Forensics in 2008, then the race was a Group 2 and conducted in the autumn. Splitting the two is unbeaten colt Hallowed Crown from the Bart and James Cummings yard. Hollowed Crown has drawn poorly but so did last year’s winner Zoustar and the likelihood of another soft track, which the son of Street Sense excels on, could mean that come race seven it is more of an advantage than not. Hoping for firming footing will be Almalad ($9.00) and Nostradamus ($8.00), the only two other runners in the race under double figure odds.

1. ALMALAD – T Berry (5)

Defeated for the first time when he resumed in the G3 Run To The Roses a fortnight ago. He sat handy to the speed and was holding his spot in the run to the line but first up on a heavy track with 60kgs, combined with a few bumps late, saw him finish second to last (3.8 lengths) behind Hallowed Crown. Berry rode him first up and didn’t press the issue over the final stages obviously with the above factors and this race in mind. Fitter, drawn well and meets them all better at the weights. Right in this on a drier track.

Odds: $8.50

2. SCRATCH ME LUCKY – T Bell (2)

He too returned to racing in the G3 Run To The Roses and after settling three back in the running line midfield, held his ground in the run home to finish sixth (3.3 lengths). That run will serve him well and the step up to 1400m will be plus. Keep in mind that he did round out last campaign with a second to Peggy Jean in the G1 Sire’s Produce Stakes (1400m) and a close up fourth to Go Indy Go in the Champagne Stakes (1600m) – both on rain effected tracks. Might get a cheeky run from two.

Odds: $41.00

3. HALLOWED CROWN – J Bowman (14)

Remained undefeated from three starts and reaffirmed his liking for wet tracks when he swept down the centre of the track to claim the G3 Run To The Roses first up from a spell a fortnight ago. He was allowed time to settle at the tail of the field before winding up in strong fashion late to win by three quarters of length with Kumoan second. Drawn wide here and will be giving most a start as they turn for home but on another wet track, can’t say he won’t make it four from four despite the gate.

Odds: $5.50

4. KUMOAN – K McEvoy (3)

His only win from six starts was on debut in a Rosehill 2yo Open race however the son of Lonhro has missed a place only once since then, including the G2 Pago Pago, G1 Champagne Stakes and last fortnight, when first up from a spell, the G3 Run To The Roses. He closed well from the back of the field to finish three quarters of length behind Hallowed Crown. An inside draw here should see him settle closer to the speed, as he did in both the Pago Pago and Champagne Stakes when drawing close to the fence and on his first up effort, cannot be left out.

Odds: $14.00

5. SCISSOR KICK – T Angland (12)

Backed up his Listed The Rosebud victory and made it three straight wins when recording the narrowest of margins over stable-mate Panzer Division (won last week’s Ming Dynasty Stakes since) in the Up and Coming Stakes three weeks back. The son of Redoute’s Choice is a professional galloper and Angland, who has partnered him in his two recent successes, will ensure he gets his chance despite the awkward gate.

Odds: $14.00

6. NOSTRADAMUS –     (3)

Returned with a solid victory in the G3 San Domenico Stakes defeating Washington Heights and Law – both unplaced on heavy tracks since, by three quarters of length. He then lined up in the G3 Run To The Roses as the 2/1 favourite where he took up a nice spot from an inside draw but just didn’t let down on the heavy track and struggled into seventh (3.5 lengths) behind Hallowed Crown. Drawn well here and should take up another spot but last start suggests he needs a dry track to produce his best – which will be good enough to be right in the finish here.

Odds: $8.00

7. MODOC – J Lloyd (15)

Returned to racing after finishing midfield in this year’s Golden Slipper, as 100/1 shot in the G3 Run To The Roses (1200m) a fortnight ago. As the Paul Perry trained galloper always does, he dropped out to near last in the run before making steady ground through the middle of the field to finish fifth (3.1 lengths) behind Hallowed Crown. Hasn’t seen a track better than heavy in his past three starts but even if we do get better footing come Saturday’s race, it’s hard to see him winning from gate 15 at this level.

Odds: $101.00

8. BACHMAN – C Brown (9)

Made it two wins from three starts with an impressive 2.3 length victory in the G3 The Schweppes earlier this year before running a disappointing second to last in the G1 Champagne Stakes and being spelled. He tackles this race first up for trainer Gerald Ryan and has had two barrier trials in preparation for it, running midfield in the most recent when not asked to do a great deal. Meets a tough challenge first up and would prefer to go with others.

Odds: $67.00

9. SNIPER FIRE – J Collett (13)

Led but struggled on the heavy track and against the better quality of opposition when off a nine week break, he finished last of ten in the G3 Run To The Roses – beaten four lengths. His form prior to that effort, on better tracks and lesser grade, was solid but it’s hard to see him leading, like he usually does, and being successful from gate thirteen in a race of this quality.

Odds: $8100

10. SHOOTING TO WIN – T Clark (11)

Settled back and didn’t make much of an impression when second to last in the Up and Coming Stakes (1300m) on a heavy track first up from a brief let-up He was then put into the race from a better draw when at his next start, he settled just behind the leaders in the G3 Ming Dynasty Stakes (1400m), again on a heavy track, and was doing his best work late to run second to Panzer Division. Showed enough last start to be given consideration here.

Odds: $16.00

11. SARAJEVO – J McDonald (8)

Despite having had only won a maiden at his first start some three months before, the Godolphin runner started the 13/8 favourite when lining up in the Listed The Rosebud a month ago. He wasn’t flash away, settled at the back of the field and had to keep working for runs in the straight before closing well to run fourth (1.2 lengths) behind Scissor Kick – good again since. After getting back to last again from the widest gate, he was home steadily through the centre of the field to claim another fourth, this time behind Hallowed Crown in the Run To The Roses at his next and most recent start. We’re still yet to see the best of this galloper. A better track and solidly run 1400m could see a sharp improvement.

Odds: $16.00

12. BETTER LAND – B Shinn (10) 56.5kgs

No luck from the widest gate in The Rosebud first up, travelling three wide on the pace throughout and lost a vital length making the turn however, the well bred Peter Moody galloper was coming agin on the line and finished second (three quarters of length) to Scissor Kick. Luck again was against him as this time he was severely impeded by the wayward Liberation over the concluding stages of the G3 Up And Coming Stakes. He finished fourth on protest but a trouble free could have seen him now a Group winner. Two runs have been very good and has to rate as one of the top chances.

Odds: $7.00

13. BRING ME THE MAID – L Nolen (6)

Exciting filly who made it three wins from five starts – two of which have been on beavy – with a comfortably 1.5 length win in the G2 Silver Shadow Stakes three weeks back. She defeated subsequent G1 winner Peggy Jean in the Magic Night Stakes and ran a cracking third to Mossfun in the Golden Slipper at her previous two starts at this track. She’ll relish any sting out of the ground and the 1400m.

Odds: $3.70

14. YGRITTE – B Avdulla (7)

Had a lovely run in transit but was disappointing when, first up from a seventeen week spell, she weakened in the run home to finish sixth (3.9 lengths) in the G3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m). The Gerald Ryan trained filly then showed good improvement – and a liking for wet tracks – but running second to Hallowed Crown in the Run To The Roses. That was her fourth placing from five Group 3 races and whilst they’ve all been solid performances, this is a step up again.

Odds: $26.00

15. PRESS REPORT – W Costin (4)

Her only win to date from seven starts was secured in the Stewards Room when she successfully protested against Liberation two starts back in an Open Class race at Rosehill two starts back. Her only start since saw her run a long last (beaten almost thirteen lengths) in the G2 Silver Shadow. Trainer Lee Cutis has sent her back to the trails where she ran third to Brazen Beau. Drawn well here and did run second to Mossfun in the Silver Slipper but this has much more depth than that race did.

Odds: $101.00

RACE OVERVIEW

With a touch of luck, Better Land could be heading into this race undefeated. He handles the wet tracks and his price represents great each-way value. Bring Me The Maid’s form speaks for itself and from gate six, Nolen should be able to place her to advantage from the jump. Almalad can make some big improvement here and whilst a drier track would be preferred, cannot be totally discounted on slow. Scissor Kick, Shooting To Win and Sarajevo – all appeal as value runners at $11, $17 and $15 respectively.
