News:
Trainer Danny O’Brien has rejected claims he has lied to Racing Victoria stewards since being made aware in January of elevated cobalt levels in four of his horses.
O’Brien told the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on Monday he had not changed his story despite stewards’ counsel Jeff Gleeson asserting he had done so on several occasions between January and July.
“I’m really offended by the word lie, Jeff,” O’Brien countered.
O’Brien has maintained throughout the hearing he did not know the recipe of the drips given to his horses by vet Tom Brennan who has also been charged.
He told the inquiry the drips consisted of electrolytes, vitamins and minerals and were for a trial period, and that he paid Brennan $3000 in a bank transfer.
O’Brien said he didn’t know Vitamin Complex, later found to contain high levels of cobalt, had been added to the drips until informed by Brennan on July 21 after the vet’s interview with stewards.
The trainer has a strained relationship with Racing Victoria stewards since January 2013 when they conducted a trial program into TCO2 levels.
Two of O’Brien’s horses were detained after a race meeting, a matter which became public.
Stewards later apologised for the incident.
The trainer also questioned how Peter Moody, who also faces cobalt charges, knew of O’Brien’s high readings before he did.
Moody rang O’Brien and told him he knew he had high cobalt readings and that stewards were at Mark Kavanagh’s stable.
Kavanagh, who also used Brennan as his vet, is facing charges at the hearing.
