Far from the glitz of million-dollar meetings and Emirati megastables, Mark Milton backs up from a 12-hour shift at a coal mine to train horses.
Working on a rotating roster, the 48-year-old Gulgong electrician devotes every spare minute to training his stable of six.
“There is no `Sunday is your day of rest’ at my place,” Milton said.
“I grew up liking horses and having a punt. I guess the next step was always to do it myself.”
A part-time trainer for more than 20 years, Milton will head to Sydney on Wednesday when the six-year-old Sooner Or Later races at Rosehill.
A horse with penchant for running on, Sooner Or Later has placed in six of his last seven country starts.
But he has a habit of misbehaving.
“He seems to stuff up a bit, whether he wants to hang a bit or misses a kick. He’s not the most straight-forward horse,” Milton said.
“What you want to do is not what he wants to do.”
Unfancied at $11, Sooner Or Later is valued well behind favourites Artistry ($3.50) and Burning Passion ($6).
But Milton said he trained for love, not money.
“If I ever get to retire it’ll be something to keep me out of trouble,” he said.
